The HPC Day conference provides a showcase of computational research in science, engineering and computer science research being carried out in the New England area. This full-day conference which took place this year on May 18, 2018 at Northeastern University featured feature speakers from NSF, research and educational leaders across the region.
Keynote speakers included Manish Parashar (NSF and Rutgers University) “Realizing a Cyberinfrastructure Ecosystem that Transforms Science”, Randy Paffenroth (Worcester Polytechnic Institute) “HPC in Data Science and Machine Learning”, Lee Makowski (Northeastern University) “Swamped – Biomedical Engineering in the age of Data”, and Scott Field (UMASS Dartmouth) “Discovering black holes and gravitational waves: algorithms and HPC.”
Speaking in the Community Building session were Julie Ma (MGHPCC) “Northeast Cyberteam Update – Projects, Portal, and the Research Computing Q&A Platform”, and Steven Cousins (University of Maine) “HPC Infrastructure and Projects at U. Maine.”
Moneesh Upmanyu (Northeastern University) “Atomic-scale Computations of High Velocity Impact of Metallic Nanoparticles: HPC Challenges” spoke in the “HPC Challenges in Computational and Diverse Data” session.
Ayse Coskun (Boston University) “Rethinking HPC Performance and the Role of Learning-Based Analytics” and Fahad Dogar (Tufts University) “Re-architecting Network Services for Modern Networked Applications” spoke in the “HPC Systems” session.
Danny Brooks (Harvard University) and Gustavo Durand (Harvard University) co-presenting “HPC and Big Data” Building a Data Sharing Community with Dataverse” and Vijay Gadepally (MIT Lincoln Labs) “AI and Enabling Research with HPC” closed out the day’s talks in the “HPC and Big Data” session.
Best-poster presentation went to Jacob Tatz, Pei-Yi (Ivy) Lin, Benjamin Warf, Ellen Grant, and Jason Sutin, Boston Children’s Hospital for “A New Cloud Wrapper for Monte Carlo eXtreme (MCX): Simulations of Near Infrared Spectroscopy to Improve Diagnosis of Infant Hydrocephalus.” All poster presentations are listed below.
The conference was hosted by the Provost’s Office and the College of Engineering at Northeastern University in collaboration with and support from Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center (MGHPCC) and several industry partners including Dell/EMC and Microway.
HPC Day 2018 co-organizers were Northeastern University ECE Distinguished Professor David Kaeli and ECE Assistant Professor Devesh Tiwari. This annual event showcases on-going scientific research in Massachusetts that is enabled through high-performance computing (HPC). This year the participants came from institutions all over the state including Boston University, Harvard, MIT, Northeastern University, Tufts University, members of the UMASS system, WPI, and also industry.
