Rhode Island INBRE Molecular Informatics Core (MIC)

The Rhode Island INBRE Molecular Informatics Core (MIC) helps researchers unlock discoveries hidden within complex biological data.

Modern biomedical research generates enormous volumes of data, from DNA sequences and gene expression profiles to molecular structures and imaging datasets. The challenge is no longer simply collecting information. It is transforming that information into meaningful scientific insight. The Rhode Island INBRE Molecular Informatics Core (MIC) was created to meet this challenge by providing researchers with the computational expertise and advanced technologies needed to analyze, visualize, and interpret complex biological data.

Under the leadership of Christopher Hemme, Ph.D., the Molecular Informatics Core serves as a statewide resource for data science, bioinformatics, sequencing support, molecular modeling, and emerging technologies such as virtual reality and 3D visualization. Hemme's career has focused on helping scientists make sense of increasingly large, complex datasets while building collaborations that bridge biology, computing, and technology. He describes his work as translating data into discovery, enabling researchers to ask bigger questions and pursue new scientific opportunities.

By providing researchers access to advanced computational tools, cloud-based resources, bioinformatics expertise, and high-throughput data analysis, MIC helps transform raw experimental results into actionable knowledge. This support strengthens research capacity across Rhode Island, advances biomedical innovation, and gives investigators the tools needed to tackle challenges ranging from human health to environmental science.
