MGHPCC Helps Advance National Data Platform with New NSF Award

September 14, 2026

A new $24.5 million National Science Foundation award to the National Data Platform (NDP) will help build a national-scale, AI-ready ecosystem that makes research data easier to discover, access, and analyze.

Reporting by Helen Hill for MGHPCC

Begun in 2023 as a collaboration among researchers at the University of California San Diego, the University of Utah, the University of Massachusetts Amherst, the Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center (MGHPCC), the Texas Advanced Computing Center, and the University of Washington eScience Institute, the NDP was created with the goal of democratizing access to scientific data and computational resources. Rather than replacing existing supercomputing and data systems, the NDP aims to unify them, enabling researchers to seamlessly combine datasets, AI tools, and computing resources across institutions.

This new award expands that mission to create a federated, AI-ready data ecosystem designed to make research data and computing resources easier to discover, access, and analyze across institutions nationwide.

For the MGHPCC community, the center’s involvement in the NDP highlights the center’s importance as a regional hub for advanced research computing and AI infrastructure. MGHPCC’s diverse ecosystem, including the new MGHPCC AI Computing Resource, the multi-institutional UNITY high-performance computing platform, and the NET2 computing and data facility supporting CERN’s ATLAS experiment, together provide a strong foundation for developing technologies that can connect research resources at national scale.
