The Northeast Storage Exchange (NESE) is a collaborative regional storage resource developed by the MGHPCC and its founding partners to address the growing need for short-term, long-term, and archival storage of research data. Created with support from the National Science Foundation, NESE provides researchers with shared storage services designed for data-intensive science and scholarship.
Housed at MGHPCC, NESE offers both disk-based and archival storage services, supporting file, block, object, and tape storage. The system is designed to provide reliable, accessible storage for research communities whose work depends on managing increasingly large datasets generated by instruments, simulations, observations, and data-driven research workflows.
NESE is governed collaboratively by MGHPCC and its founding university partners, with the goal of creating a long-term, sustainable storage facility that serves regional researchers while also supporting national and international science projects. The project has also worked in concert with other cyberinfrastructure efforts, including the Open Storage Network and related research data initiatives, helping to expand access to shared data resources across institutional boundaries.
As research increasingly depends on the ability to store, share, and preserve large volumes of digital information, NESE represents an important component of the broader ecosystem of computing, storage, and networking resources hosted at MGHPCC.
